Water 101 – Rural-Urban Water Interconnectivity

Series Type Rural Learning
Subject Energy & Environment
Subject Water

During the February 2021 winter storm, Texans got a terribly clear view of the fragility of the state’s water supplies and infrastructure, as almost half of the state’s population lost water. Rural areas of Texas are particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events, such as droughts or floods, as water infrastructure in rural communities is often in poor shape or lacking altogether. Additionally, the water supply for rural Texans, which is primarily groundwater, is not always well managed or protected. This not only threatens rural communities and landowners, but also iconic springs and rivers and Texans in growing urban centers as well.

This session features experts with on-the-ground experience who will introduce us to the landscape of water issues in Texas, particularly how rural and urban water issues are connected.
