Eligible EntitiesIn order to be eligible to receive funding from the Legacy Foundation, an organization must: 1) Be a nonprofit organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and exempt from taxation under section 501(a) or 170(c); or an organization described in sections 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code. 2) Serve residents of Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr or Willacy counties. 3) Request funding for projects or programs that demonstrate a positive effect on the health of residents within our funding area. 4) Have no funded requests on file within the previous 12 month period within the Responsive or Collaborative categories.
Focus AreaThe Legacy Foundation funds programs that measurably improve the health of those living in the lower Rio Grande Valley by promoting healthy lifestyles and providing increased access to healthcare for all. The Foundation's number one strategic priority is Obesity and Diabetes Prevention. However, they consider funding for all types of health-related initiatives that fall under the following additional program areas: healthy lifestyles, access to care, mental health, aging in place, dental health, medical education, breast cancer, and scholarships.
Through its Collaborative Grants, the Legacy Foundation will both accept and initiate (through an RFP process) applications that fall between $50,000 - $500,000. These are meant to encourage collaboration among organizations working on larger projects, but a single organization's larger project could qualify as well. Collaborative Grants involving various partners can be strengthened by providing Letters of Support within the application which fully describe the nature of the project and collaboration.
